How Do I Prepare for the Cardiac Stress Study?

Do I need to fast before the stress study? Can I have caffeine?

Part 2 of a myocardial perfusion study is the stress portion and requires preparation before your appointment.

2. What You Need to Know

Our current instructions state:

  • Nothing to eat or drink for four hours before the study
  • Patients with diabetes: nothing to eat or drink for three hours
  • No caffeine for 12 hours before the study
  • Some medications may need to be stopped if directed by the technologist during Part 1

3. Preparing for the Stress Study

Do I need to fast?

Yes.

Do not eat or drink for four hours before the study. For patients with diabetes, the current instruction is three hours.

Can I have caffeine?

No.

Avoid caffeine for 12 hours before your stress study.

4. Before You Contact MMI

Follow any medication instructions provided by the Nuclear Medicine team during Part 1.

Do not change or stop medications unless you have been instructed to do so.
