Why Was I Called Back After a Mammogram?

Why might I be recalled after a screening mammogram? Does a callback mean something is wrong?

1. Overview

Being asked to return after a screening mammogram does not automatically mean that there is a problem.

Sometimes additional imaging is needed so the radiologist can obtain more information.

2. What You Need to Know

A callback may involve additional mammogram images, ultrasound or other imaging requested to clarify an area seen on the original examination.

3. Mammography Callbacks

Does being recalled mean I have cancer?

No. A callback by itself does not mean that cancer has been diagnosed.

Additional imaging is often requested so an area can be looked at more closely.

Why are more images needed?

The radiologist may need additional views or another type of imaging to properly assess a finding.
